Reimagining the Internet Assignment Questions
1. Vint Cerf has described the InterNet as a homogenous network that connects heterogeneous computers. What did he mean by that?
The network universally connects computers and other devices with different opertating systems.
2. What is Metcalfe's law? (Hint: Use Google.)
Metcalfe's law states that the value of a telecommunications network is proportional to the square of the number of connected users of the system.
3. Where geographically are the majority of Internet Users located?
The majority of Internet users are located in Asia.
4. Concerning the percentage of a country’s population that uses the Internet, with what are mobiles helping?
Mobiles are helping the Internet penetrate the global population and connecting more users together globally.
5. In design terms, what differentiates the Internet from earlier networks such as the Telephone and Telegraph networks?
Previous networks required lengths of physical cables to connect users globally. Technology such as microwaves and satellites make it simpler to connect to the network wirelessly.
6. Was there a particular logic in Vint Cerf's choice of a 32 bit address space for IP addresses?
There was no logic behind Vint Cerf's choice of 32 bit address. It started off as an experiment and soon became the Internet.
7. How do digital signatures relate to closing an important vulnerability in the DNS system?
Digital signatures have the capability to bind the domain an IP address.
8. What is a sensor network? Give an example.
A sensor network can sense when electricity is consumed at their peek. An example is a smart grid.
9. What does Vint serve describe as one of the hardest problems that he can imagine?
Troubleshooting configuration.
10. Why is cloud collaboration important?
It is important because we want to be able to move data back and forth or share with another cloud-based server.
11. How does Vint Cerf describe the job that his Internet Design did with mobile? Specifically, what was the problem?
At the time, Vint Cerf did not know that the nodes on the network had to change.
12. How does Vint Cerf describe the job that his Internet Design did with broadcast? Specifically, what was the problem?
Vint Cerf describes that his internet design was an imperfection when dealing with broadcast media. The problem was that he turned broadcast media into a point to point link.
13. What is strong authentication? Why is the lack of this an issue?
Strong authentication confirms who or what a device or user is interacting with. The lack of this is an issue because users cannot be convinced that their data/information is secure on the cloud.
14. In an Internet context, what is the overrun problem?
The overrun problem is when someone is taking an advantage of the assets that are rightfully yours and in turn, using them against you.
15. What does Cerf cite as a problem with the Internet and copyright?
The problem is that what is created today might not be the interpretation in the future.
16. What does Cerf mean when he talks about rotten bits? Give an example.
Cerf is referring to the concept of data decay. Information on the web becomes outdated and can be misinterpreted in the future. For example, a program written in Windows 95 not running properly on Windows 10.
17. Briefly describe the InterPlanetary Internet. In your description, describe how this solves the point to point InterPlanetary communications problem.
Interplanetary Internet is a concept of computer networks in space. The goal is to start developing technologies that would reduce the delay caused by the long distance.
18. In an Internet context, what is common carriage? What implications does this have for Internet billing?
Common carriage means to have the same rules that apply to everyone. The implications of this are that as long as you are under contract, you pay as much as your neighbor pays. The internet should not be charged on a per usage model or it will hinder growth.
19. What does Cerf means when he says that in the future, the network will disappear?
All devices will be one network and everything will be able to connect.
Internet Resources Assignment Questions
1. What is the Internet Society?

2. Who is Vint Cerf?
One of the fathers of the internet. He co-designed TCP/IP protocols and the basic architecture of the internet.
3. Who is Bob Kahn?
Also known as one of the fathers of the internet. He invented TCP/IP, with Vint Cerf. He was also responsible for originating DARPA’s Internet program.
4. As articulated by Lynn St. Amour, what is ISOC’s hope for the future?
